Pepsi is ‘lost in space’ (advertising) again – just don’t mention the ‘orbital billboards’

Regular readers will know that Dr Mumbo loves to report on the weird and wonderful new mediums of advertising dreamed up by the industry’s pretenders. Sorry, he of course meant to say futurists.

Over the years, there has been advertising on armpits. Advertising on car windows. And now, it is said there were plans for Pepsi to advertise in space – with “orbital billboards” no less.

What could be better than a Pepsi logo shining from the sky? A Pepsi logo not shining from the sky, perhaps.

Anyhow, the soft drinks company has apparently abandoned plans to use the satellites of Russian space start-up StartRocket to advertise its imaginatively-titled energy drink ‘Adrenaline Rush’.

It seems the Pepsi crew got cold feet. “We can confirm StartRocket performed an exploratory test for stratosphere advertisements using the Adrenaline GameChangers logo,” a company spokesperson said.

“This was a one-time event; we have no further plans to test or commercially use this technology at this time.”

What a shame.

Still, Pepsi does seem to love being ‘lost in space’. Remember this ad from Chinese New Year?
