Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus ropes in Robert Downey Jr for new campaign

Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus has created a campaign to tie in with its OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro launches, hiring Robert Downey Jr as brand ambassador.

The commercials featuring Robert Downey Jr will break in India and China, the brand’s biggest markets. Hiring celebrities has been fraught with risk for smartphone brands. Many celebrities have been outed using phones other than the ones they are supposed to be endorsing and OnePlus is no exception.

The smartphone brand had previously used veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan extensively in its advertising in India; only to have the star take to Twitter asking for help with his Samsung Galaxy S9.

Speaking about the decision to bring Robert Downey Jr on board, OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau said: “We at OnePlus believe in having a laser focus in everything we do and in doing whatever it takes to create an exceptional experience for our community.

“Working with Robert Downey Jr, we see that these ideologies are reflected in him as well, in his creativity and dedication. This synergy has us convinced that nobody could represent what we stand for better and we are delighted to welcome Robert Downey Jr into the OnePlus family.”

Robert Downey Jr added: “It’s cool to see a young brand disrupting the tech landscape. I was challenged to help them create an authentic campaign based on the tenets of quality and craftsmanship, and it’s already proving to be a great fit creatively. In checking out the upcoming ‘OnePlus 7 Pro’ the attention to detail coupled with innovative design was truly impressive.”

Even before Robert Downey Jr came on board at OnePlus, smartphones from the region have gravitated towards actors famous for playing superheroes. Indian mobile phone brand Micromax briefly had Hugh Jackman as brand ambassador.
