Essence APAC CEO Kyoko Matsushita given global chief client officer mandate

Essence’s Asia-Pacific CEO Kyoko Matsushita has become the company’s first global chief client officer. Matsushita will continue to oversee the region during the period of transition.

She will now be part of the worldwide management team at the agency currently consisting of global CEO Christian Juhl, global chief operating officer Steve Williams, global chief talent officer Jennifer Remling, global chief strategy officer Damian Blackden and global chief of product operations Rich Mooney.

A release from Essence said: “Matsushita will be responsible for evolving and nurturing Essence’s global client services practice, overseeing quality of work, boosting organic account growth, and collaborating on new business initiatives.”

Matsushita has extensive experience in technology firms. Having started her career in Leo Burnett, she has been with video game publisher Electronic Arts and social gaming firm Gree UK. She joined Essence in 2014 to lead the Asia-Pacific region and has seen the network expand with offices in Bengaluru, Delhi, Jakarta, Melbourne, Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo.

In a previous interview with Mumbrella, Matsushita said: “Something I’m looking at quite aggressively is bringing media and creative much closer together. You can choose the right media platform, but if the creative is poor and the messaging not right, the whole thing just doesn’t work. Creative is 70% the success of a campaign.

Speaking about her appointment Essence global CEO Christian Juhl said: “Kyoko’s experience working across media, creative, and marketing will continue to be extremely critical as we work with our clients to solve increasingly complex marketing challenges.

“She has demonstrated outstanding business and client leadership in her time at Essence. She is the perfect individual to take on this role and take our client services teams to the next stage.”

Matsushita added: “Essence’s client centricity is what has helped us develop such a compelling offering in the marketplace. Because our teams are deeply involved in the evolution of our product offering, we’re able to adapt our services and processes to meet changes in our clients’ needs more quickly. I’m excited to work with our senior client services team as we groom the next generation of marketing leaders at Essence.”
