Cheuk Chiang appointed Greater North CEO at DAN – remains non-executive chairman at Mutiny Group

Cheuk Chiang has been appointed to the role of CEO Greater North at the Dentsu Aegis Network. Chiang will be based in Shanghai, China and report to Dentsu Aegis Network Asia-Pacific CEO Ashish Bhasin.

A media industry veteran, Chiang had spent over a decade years with Omnicom Media Group, stepping down last April as CEO of Asia-Pacific. He was most recently partner, investor and chairman at Mutiny Group which claims to be the “the world’s first predictive advertising agency”.

At the time of his joining Mutiny in January this year, the then-Australia based Chiang said:“Predictive advertising is truly the next frontier of our industry and I’m excited and humbled to be part of this new future.” Chiang will remain non-executive chairman at Mutiny and retain his stake in the agency.

In his role at Dentsu, he will oversee Dentsu Aegis Network operations in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. He will also be chairman of Dentsu Aegis Network China and a part of the Asia-Pacific executive team.

His appointment comes at a time when China and Australia were singled out as weak markets in Dentsu’s latest quarterly report which said: “There are no green shoots of recovery in either market, both of which continue to severely impact the regional and group performance.”

It also comes on the heels of a significant shift in senior management at Dentsu’s Australia operations which saw the exit of Henry Tajer who had moved from Amazon to Dentsu earlier this year.

Prior to Cheung’s appointment, DAN’s Asia-Pacific executive chairman Takaki Hibino was overseeing the Greater North region following a restructuring at DAN announced earlier this year, which saw the exit of former China CEO Susanna Tsui.

A press release from DAN said: “The appointment follows the announcement of the simplified three-cluster structure in March this year, which was put in place to further operationalise our markets, giving them the autonomy to react to client needs.

“This allows our businesses to deliver more strategic and market-specific initiatives at pace and scale.”

DAN Asia-Pacific CEO Ashish Bhasin said: “Greater North is a critical collection of markets that needs a strong and accomplished leader to drive our business forward in an increasingly complex and challenging landscape.

“Cheuk is a visionary leader who’s keenly focused on reinventing the way the industry operates, consistent with the vision of our business and the value we place on our clients. He has played a pivotal role in driving transformation across the industry.

“It was clear from the start that he is the perfect candidate to navigate these fast-paced markets for our clients. I am delighted to have Cheuk join the Asia-Pacific executive team to drive value and realise the long-term growth in our business.”

Chiang added: “As an industry, we are seeing unprecedented changes and at Dentsu Aegis Network, I saw a company that is leading that change. Its capabilities are future-facing and it is important for me to be able to contribute to a network that can leverage its competitive strengths to meet new demands.

“I am delighted to take on this leadership in one of the most dynamic and technologically advanced group of markets in our industry. The Greater North presents us with a combination of unique challenges and opportunities, which Dentsu Aegis Network is extremely well-positioned to capitalise on with our unparalleled market-specific offerings. I look forward to taking our Greater North business forward.”

Apart from his role as CEO of Asia-Pacific, Bhasin continues to lead the Greater South cluster even as the search for a successor is ongoing.
