PR agency MHP rebrands as Sandpiper in Asia following MBO

PR firm MHP Communications has rebranded to Sandpiper in Asia Pacific following a share buy-back by MHP Asia Pacific chief executive Emma Smith.

Emma Smith: plans to open China office in 2020

The agency has offices in Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney, with plans to open an office in mainland China in 2020.

Smith, who sold 51% of her Hong Kong-based agency The Consultancy to HMP in 2013, said the business will be 100% employee-owned.

Sandpiper will be positioned as a strategic communications consultancy, operating globally, and will continue to work under one global P&L.

Smith said the new structure will enable Sandpiper to invest in data and research capability and new AI-driven technologies.

“This buy-back will allow us to build our capability and footprint across the region faster,” Smith said. “Our immediate plans include opening a permanent office in mainland China in 2020, and bolstering our data and research offering, including our investment in new AI-driven technologies.

She added that Sandpiper will continue to focus on the financial, healthcare, technology and consumer brands sectors.

“As an employee-owned business, our team have been very much a part of the development of our new brand and business plans, and we are looking forward to the future,” Smith said.
