Y&R launches in Burma

Y&R YangonWPP advertising network Y&R has opened for business in Burma.

Through a joint venture with local agency K-Noke Advertising, Y&R Yangon is one of the first agencies to be majority owned by a Western network, and joins the likes of Dentsu, WPP siblings JWT and Ogilvy and research firm TNS in the Southeast Asian country of 55m people.

Y&R Yangon will be led by Khin Myat Thu as GM, new business development director John Kyaw Myo Htun and director Aung Kyaw Oo.

Khin Myat Thu has had extensive client-side experience, having worked at Dagon Brewery, Myanmar Texcorp and International Beverages Trading. John Kyaw Myo Htun’s has worked at Diageo and market research firm MMRD, while Aung Kyaw Oo’s career has involved stints at Today Tourism Magazine and Myanmar Spa Today Advertising, Mango Marketing and Coca Media.

Y&R’s global boss David Sable said in a press release: “Y&R Yangon is one of the only majority-owned international agencies in Myanmar, which affirms our long-term commitment to the country, and the bright future we foresee there.”

The news comes as Y&R – one of the world’s oldest advertising agencies – celebrates its 90th birthday.
