J. Walter Thompson has appointed a new managing director for its Beijing office following the departure of Tammy Sheu, who moves on after three and a half years with the agency.

Joining the agency as MD is Jeffrey Yu from Edelman-owned Pegasus Communications China, which made international headlines last year after two executives with ties to the firm were investigated by the authorities for graft.

Yu – who shares the same name as the former boss Bates and Publicis Greater China – brings with him client-side experience with the Galaxy Entertainment Group in Macau, and also worked for Ogilvy PR and Pilot Public Relations in Taipei. He began his career as a TV anchor.

Sheu is moving on to a Chinese tech firm, according to the agency.

“Jeffrey is a that rare leader who will help us reinvent our creative product for a “bottom up” digital age without abandoning the timeless and fundamental power of brand ideas and creative breakthrough. What’s more, his empathy, respect for Chinese culture and natural ebullience will energize our operations and client relationships,” said Tom Doctoroff, the regional boss of JWT.

On Sheu, Doctoroff said: “Tammy has performed heroically during a period in which the demands of our clients have evolved and communications opportunities have multiplied. Through it all, JWT Beijing’s momentum has accelerated and the unity of our culture has deepened. We hope that Tammy, after she experiences the excitement of her new corporate opportunity, will one day come home to the J. Walter Thompson Company.”
