SIA to fly A380 on National Day over Batey era Singapore girls in closing parade

Singapore Airlines Airbus A380Singapore Airlines has announced it is to fly an Airbus A380, decorated with the Singapore flag, in the annual fly-by on National Day for the first time for the country’s massively hyped 50th birthday celebrations.

The plane will fly over Marina Bay during the closing segment of the show, which will feature 20 Singapore Girls on trishaws in a nod to the famous Singapore Airlines ads of the Batey era.

The SG50 logo features on the engines and the ‘Majulah Singapura – Our Golden Jubilee’ logo on the underside.

Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said: “Singapore Airlines’ success is closely linked to that of Singapore, and like all Singaporeans we look forward to celebrating the nation’s birthday on 9 August. We are honoured to be participating in the National Day Parade during Singapore’s Golden Jubilee year, with the world’s largest passenger aircraft in the aerial flypast and our iconic Singapore Girl cabin crew in the Vintage Parade.”

Here is an early Singapore Airlines ad featuring the Singapore Girl on her way to the airport, with scenes shot in Boat Quay, the old Paya Lebar Airport and Orchard Road.

The earlier work of Ian Batey’s Batey Ads advertising agency, which helped build the Singapore Airlines brand, is still regarded as some of the best ever created in Singapore.

Singapore Airlines has released a film of an A380 having the national flag applied to its body.
