Uber outrageous

UberDr Mumbo likes Singapore tabloid The New Paper’s yarn about a woman who paid the equivalent fare of a plane ride to Kuala Lumpur for a ride in an Uber taxi across town.

For the sedate citystate, it’s a gripping tale.

Woman is late for meeting.

Decides to book Uber car.

Chooses most expensive option.

Jumps in car with colleagues.

Charge surges to 2.4 times regular rate.

Cue outrage after reaching destination.

However the level of outrage isn’t helped much by this quote from the aggrieved customer: “I was in such a rush that day that I just acknowledged the surge pricing without thinking too much about it.”

At which point the news value of the story diminishes somewhat.

“I felt a 2.25X surge of disbelief, ” wrote someone on Facebook today who posted the quote.

“This post is sponsored by the Land Transport Authority and Comfort,” wrote someone else, referring to those they feel would enjoy a negative story about the fast-growing taxi-hailing app.

The New Paper story ends with: “Ms Lambert, who admitted that she is not very savvy with apps, said that she has learnt her lesson.”

Well, someone has.
