Fishermen’s #KucingHappy campaign wins top honours at Kancils, Dentsu Utama wins AOY

#KuchingHappyTop honours at Malaysia’s premier creative awards show, the Kancils, went to independent digital agency Fishermen Integrated for their popular social campaign for Bank Simpanan Nasional.

Fishermen was behind the ‘Kucing happy’ campaign for BSN, which featured a cat who responded to fans via the hashtag #KucingHappy. The idea was awarded the Golden Kancil on Friday night in Kuala Lumpur. BSN was named advertising of the year.

The winner of the Grand Kancil this year was a less controversial choice than last year, when BBDO Malaysia’s top honours-winning ad for KFC was called out for copycatting. BBDO did not enter the Kancils this year.

Fishermen also won the Kancil For Good for Sama Sama campaign for BSN.

Dentsu Utama, the creative shop set up by Dentsu Aegis in 2005, won agency of the year.

The agency didn’t win a single gold Kancil (see medal tally, below), but claimed 12 silvers and 64 bronzes, including numerous prizes for its print and outdoor work for WWF Indonesia, and across a range of categories for GPS Bay, Web Privacy Watch, Uyee Chinese Medicine Company and Jakarta Bintang Cyclist Club.

Media personality of the year went to business magazine The Edge, which had its licence suspended for its probing coverage of 1MDB saga. The award comes a week after The Edge’s publisher Ho Kay Tat was named Media Person of the Year at the Malaysian Media Conference.

The Kancils introduced a new award for young achievers this year, which went to TBWA\Kuala Lumpur creatives Olivia Ariferiani, Abiseshana Mohan and Carmen Cheong.
