SpotX appoints Marcus Tan from Pubmatic as new Asia MD

Marcus TanAd tech company SpotX, formerly SpotXchange, has hired a new boss for Asia, Mumbrella can reveal.

Joining the company as regional managing director is Marcus Tan, who is looking to make a number of hires as the company looks to expand its APAC operations.

Tan brings 20 years of experience to the role, and comes on board after a 10-month stint at Pubmatic, where he was APAC head of high growth solutions.

News of his arrival comes a month after Mumbrella reported the departure of APAC MD Matt Von der Muhll and commercial director Sujen Selva, who have moved on to new roles in Australia.

Tan will work across both SpotX’s APAC offices in Sydney and Singapore 0 the regional HQ – and has a brief to expand the business across the region, in markets including India, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.

He will also be overseeing a period of rapid recruitment for the company.

SpotX is looking to hire a business development manager, a director of demand, a marketing manager, and a manager of demand facilitation for the Asia Pacific region.

Tan pointed to a period of “huge opportunity” for programmatic video in Asia in the year ahead given improvements made to infrastructure in potentially large markets such as Indonesia, the high consumption of online video and falling cost of internet subscriptions due to competition between telcos.

On recently reported restructuring at his previous employer, sell-side platform Pubmatic, and also at demand-side platform Turn, Tan described consolidation in the sector as “healthy.”

“No industry is likely to grow without a period of contraction. Some businesses are looking to simplify their processes to handle customers more effectively. Some companies expanded too fast and need to streamline. I don’t see this as a negative,” he said.

“The market is changing. Consumption of advertising is changing. Companies are learning to adapt to consumer needs, so I see these activities [restructuring at Turn and Pubmatic] as positive,” he said.

From a SpotX perspective, Tan referred to the company’s acquisition by European broadcaster RTL as part of “a commitment for us to grow outwards and become a global player.”

“This time next year, we won’t just have Australia and New Zealand office [in APAC]. We will have a bigger Singapore office, we’ll have feet on the ground in other parts of Asia,” he said.

Tan was previously Asia director for BBM Channels, BlackBerry’s mobile social media platform.
