Black man inserted into washing machine in ‘completely racist’ Chinese laundry detergent ad
A laundry detergent ad in China has been called out for overt racism.
The commercial, which sees a black man manouvred into a washing machine and emerge as a Chinese man, has been running on national TV and in cinemas, according a report by blog Shanghaiist.
The ad for Qiaobi begins with a woman doing her laundry. A black man appears covered in paint, and she ushers him towards the washing machine where she stuff detergent into his mouth before pushing him into the machine. After the wash is done, a clean Chinese man emerges from the machine.
The video has been viewed almost 1m times since being uploaded to YouTube yesterday.
Shanghaiist notes that the “completely racist” ad appears to be a copy of an Italian commercial from about a decade ago in which a woman inserts a man into a washing machine who emerges black.
Sadly, this doesn’t do anything to lessen China’s image as a copycat country. Same music, concept – same everything. What’s even more sad and depressing is that it isn’t even that great of a concept to begin with – so why even bother.
