IPG Mediabrands poaches Omnicom Media Group ANZ boss Leigh Terry to lead APAC

IPG Mediabrands has poached another top Australian media agency executive, this time taking Omnicom Media Group ANZ CEO Leigh Terry to head up its Asia Pacific division.

Terry, who will be based in Sydney, comes in to fill the vacant APAC CEO following a reorganisation of the group by geography led by global CEO Henry Tajer, previously UM Australia boss, who has made a number of major hires since taking the top seat in 2014.

Among them are Starcom Australia boss John Sintras for a global business development role, Di Richardson from Starcom as UM’s US strategy director and Charles Godbold in a global auditing role. He has also moved UM Australia boss Mat Baxter into a global strategy role.

Change at IPG Mediabrands has also led to exits, with Prashant Kumar, the head of World Markets Asia, moving on following the restructure. Last week, IPG Mediabrands Hong Kong boss Lilian Leong left to join a startup. A replacement for Leong has yet to be announced.

Terry will partner with Reg Davidson, a long-time ally of Henry Tajer who was named chief financial officer of IPG Mediabrands APAC earlier this year.

“Asia Pacific is a key priority for regional investment over the next five years,” Tajer said in a statement.

“The region continues to hold enormous potential for our clients and our business and Leigh possesses the talent, experience and vision to deliver on the plans we have in place.

“Leigh is a very highly respected and effective executive who has been on our most-wanted list for quite some time and I am very excited he has chosen to join us.”

Peter Horgan, the head of OMD Australia, has been promoted to replace Terry.

Terry commented: “After an amazing 18 years at Omnicom it was not an easy decision as I leave many friends, not just colleagues.”

“However, with the broader international opportunities and the energy, vision and leadership at IPG Mediabrands I am excited to be creating a new chapter in my career. I am really looking forward to working with Henry and the team to deliver their vision and in doing so help take IPG Mediabrands to new heights.”

OMD CEO Peter Horgan is set replace Terry in the group role following the announcement.

Horgan will report to Cheuk Chiang, CEO of Omnicom Media Group APAC.
