Maxis ad for 4G service draws comparisons with TC Bank classic ‘Dream rangers’

Malaysian telco Maxis has launched a short film based around the theme of friendship to promote the connectivity of its 4G service.

The three-minute film begins with a character called Omar, who receives as a gift a tablet from his friends.

The film finishes with the words, “A good connection gets you in touch. But a great one takes you further.

Maxis calls on the viewer to share the film “with anyone who’s made a difference in your life.”

The film, which was created by IPG Mediabrands’ content arm Ensemble, has been fairly well received in social media, although some viewers have pointed out the film’s similarities to ‘Dream rangers’, a popular ad by Ogilvy Taiwan for TC Bank from 2011.

Ensemble Malaysia’s executive creative director Woei Hern Chan commented: “I think a lot of people are mistaking the treatment for the idea.”

“We were very aware and respectful of dream rangers and tried to stay true to our own narrative. It’s inspired by the bonds of brotherhood we all have and cherish. And also the many biking trips that we’ve seen on our Facebook wall feeds. Personally, it’s an homage to all the storytellers and the films that we grew up with learning and loving,” he said.
