BBH to sit outside of Publicis Communications in China as leadership line-up announced

Publicis Groupe has named its China market leadership line-up for Publicis Communications, a new umbrella brand set up for its advertising agencies.

Michael Lee, the CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Greater China, has been named CEO of Publicis Communications Greater China, and David Gompel, Greater China CEO of Publicis Worldwide, have been named CEO and COO, respectively of Publicis Communications Greater China.

This means that the two men will have oversight over agency brands Leo Burnett, Prodigious and MSL in China, in addition to Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis. However, as is the case in Singapore, BBH will not fall under the Publicis Communications umbrella, the group has confirmed with Mumbrella today. “Not for BBH at this stage,” a corporate communications executive said.

Meanwhile Margaret Huang, currently CEO of Publicis Communications in Taiwan, will add to her current duties the role of chairman for Leo Burnett in Greater China.

The trio will report in to Loris Nold, global COO of Publicis Communications.

Nold commented that the move is about giving clients “full access” to the network’s resources.

“The combination of leveraging the strength of our creative brands while giving our agencies an unparalleled ability to deliver best in class solutions is extremely powerful,” he said in a press release.

Publicis Groupe’s strategy for pushing its agencies closer together has met with a mixed response from the industry. Some say that it was necessary move in the name of integration following the failed merger with Omnicom, while others have pointed out that it has served only to commoditised once-great agency names such as Saatchi & Saatchi and BBH.
