Singtel-owned streaming video on-demand platform Hooq has named former BBC Worldwide’s Michael Fleshman as its chief technology officer as it looks to expand into new markets.

He will be responsible for Hooq’s innovation and lead the strategic planning and development of its product and platform.

The streaming firm said his principal task will be delivering a “flawless customer experience”.

“We are elated to welcome Michael to HOOQ as part of our senior leadership team. At the same time, we are ecstatic by his depth of experience in the digital media space,” Hooq chief executive Peter Bithos said.

“I have no doubt he will lead our technical team to new heights as we expand aggressively into new territories, new products and new platforms in 2017.”

The CTO role is regarded as pivotal in the streaming space as companies look to tie up with telcos in target markets.

Prior to that, he spent almost three years as senior vice president of consumer digital technology at BBC Worldwide in London where he led the teams responsible for the development of the BBC Store, as well as the creation of new platforms for BBC Worldwide’s digital properties

Fleshman also held roles with Viacom, Financial Times and AOL.

“I am excited to be part of such a dynamic start-up and I look forward to driving the company into its new phase of innovation and technology,” he said.

Hooq only entered its home market of Singapore at the back end of 2016, almost two years after its launch in the Philippines, where Bithos is based.
