Dr Mumbo

Alibaba’s Jack Ma – Asia’s answer to David Brent, ‘chilled-out entertainer’?

Dr Mumbo is getting on a bit these days. So much so that he is probably one of the few remaining among the media crowd who still delights in the original British version of the Noughties television series The Office.

For those whose cultural frame of reference is sadly lacking this comedy classic, or worse still for those who have only ever watched Steve Carrell’s American version, here’s a prime example. The sitcom’s boss David Brent has a unique approach to corporate training and team building in his kingdom of Slough.

Regrettably for Dr Mumbo, Brent is a work of fiction. But all of us know someone in the workplace who has the personality traits of a certain “chilled-out entertainer”.

Indeed, Dr M thinks thinks he has found the one boss who might out-Brent even the man himself.

But unlike Brent and his seemingly one-dimensional acoustic guitar, Alibaba’s chairman Jack Ma appears to be a man of many talents. He even bagged himself a gig in a kung fu action film – destroying the lead actor in a fight. Slough’s finest (Brent) would be proud.

But it doesn’t stop there folks. Only last month, Ma thrilled Alibaba employees with this impression of Michael Jackson.

And of course who could forget Ma belting out this 1960s classic hit Unchained Melody?

But now that the bar is set so high, what’s left for Ma to attempt next? Well, there are still some Brent moves to eclipse Mr Alibaba. Do your best Jack, the competition is on so hit that dance floor.

But finally, let’s hope it doesn’t end for Ma the way it did for Brent (see below). We very much doubt it will as one of these men ran a branch of a small company on an industrial estate in Slough. The other could end up running, well, the world.

Dr M signing off, job done.
