Recycle with Tiger Beer and be rewarded – with more plastic packaging

As regular readers will know, Dr Mumbo is a big fan of brands’ attempts to boost their corporate social responsibility efforts.

So he was rather heartened to see Tiger Beer putting its money where its mouth is and heading out into Singapore’s heartlands to encourage people to up their recycling game.

Partnering with Singapore’s informal waste collectors – known as ‘rag and bone men’ – Tiger has been doing its rounds of the HDB blocks, collecting recyclable waste, handing out fliers and just generally being an all-round nice, conscientious brand that Dr Mumbo likes to see.

However, while Dr Mumbo would like applaud Tiger’s altruistic efforts, he was rather perplexed by the beer brand’s choice of an incentive gift for the estates’ happy recyclers –a metal keyring encased in plastic packaging promoting “the ultimate Tiger brewery experience”.

A very environmentally-friendly present indeed.

Dr Mumbo just sincerely hopes Tiger is not encouraging residents to pass this well-intentioned gift to the rag-and-bone men when they’re finished with it.

Instead he hopes they are directing them to their rightful place: Singapore’s landfill sites, where they can remain in perpetuity with all the discarded Tiger beer bottles.
