‘You may eat the bride’ – The Korean love story of a man and his Mamee instant noodles

Dr Mumbo is a sucker for a good old romance tale; especially those rare ones when love conquers against all odds, which is why he never finished Titanic.

As such he was thrilled when this leaked ad by BBDO Malaysia for noodle brand Mamee made its way onto his news feed – courtesy of ex-ECD VJ Anand.

Of course Dr Mumbo can’t imagine for the life of him who may have leaked the unapproved ad.

He was also perplexed as to why a seemingly finished campaign showing nothing more than an innocent Korean love story had so far not left the agency floor.

The two-minute love story starts out with the usual affair: handsome Korean executive spots a beautiful new receptionist – what else would she be? – from afar and immediately falls head over heels.

“Korean-Malaysian mix,” his less attractive colleague remarks as the camera saucily pans up the woman’s legs for the big reveal – the lady isn’t a real lady.

With the young man’s heart – and tastebuds – suitably fired up, the executive tries to woo his striking new colleague by taking her to lunch.

Unfortunately, he soon discovers – what with her being Malaysian and all – that she’s fasting. Rookie error there mate.

However, the ad being confined by its two-minute timeframe, the romance quickly starts to sizzle between the pair, so within the very next scene, the man is proposing. And she accepts. Now that’s speed dating for you.

Dr Mumbo could not help but shed a tear when the young lady sighs, “I’m not the prettiest”, to which her beau offers a line even Mills & Boon could not have penned: “No! You’re Malaysia’s best and most springy noodles.” Who says romance is dead folks?

This being 2018, Dr Mumbo then decided two-minutes was much too long and decided to skip to the end – the not-so-long awaited wedding.

During this lovely affair, the less attractive colleague – now the best man – makes a reappearance to deliver this classic of a line: ‘You may eat the bride.’

The end.

Or wait is it? Turns out there’s more drama going on behind the romantic rollercoaster than old Dr Mumbo anticipated.

Here’s what Tan Feng Yin, the senior brand manager for Mamee Double Decker, had to say about the ad’s mysterious early upload.

“I can confirm that the ad that has been leaked is not the final version. The ad was approved but following one last review by the team, the release was put on hold so that some small changes could be made.”

Dr Mumbo just hopes nobody ends up in hot water over this one.
